Meet Gosford’s latest More Than a Number, Matthew!

Status

PhD Student and Casual Academic.

Have you always been involved in fitness or exercise?
Throughout the years, I have done some running. Only in recent times did I join a gym and start doing weight training and cardio together.

What brought you to Planet Fitness?
I wanted a gym where I could workout at an affordable price. Also when I came to Planet I realised how warm and inviting the atmosphere is so decided to sign up!

Did you have a goal when you first joined Planet Fitness?
I’ve been at uni for a long time. When I was in the second year of my postgraduate studies I was doing a lot of commuting, sitting at a desk, without much exercise. I tried a few gyms as a way of releasing stress and getting fit – then found Planet. I was amazed by how affordable the membership was, so decided to sign up and have never looked back since!

Have you achieved what you set out to do?
I have gained muscle mass, and still have a way to go on my weight loss journey. I think diet is the hardest challenge! The motivating posters in the gym remind me that no matter how many times I slip off the fitness bandwagon, I can always get back on it in a friendly, relaxed environment.

What was your perception of gyms/health clubs before you joined? Has it changed after joining Planet Fitness?
There are a lot of gyms which are quite forceful when it comes to membership. Also, I think that some gyms tend to judge people based on their weight. The Judgement Free philosophy of Planet is not just a motto – when you come here you don’t get that high pressure/forcefulness of other gyms. At Planet you’ll be part of a healthy community that offers a good value membership, several fitness classes and a general overall good environment. Also, it doesn’t matter how many times you think you deviate from your fitness plan, just turning up at the gym makes you a winner each time.

What are your fitness goals for the future?
My goals are to increase muscle mass further, lose some weight and incorporate mindful exercises into my training (e.g., yoga and stretches).

Biggest obstacles you have had to overcome on your fitness journey?
Exercise is fun – diet is the biggest challenge! At Planet the Personal Trainers can help advise you on all areas of fitness, and I found their free consult very helpful.

What advice do you have for those who are thinking of joining Planet Fitness?
Go for it! At Planet you’ll be part of a healthy community that offers a good value membership, several fitness classes and a general overall good environment.

Do you have sources of inspiration? If so what are they?
My parents, as they are very hardworking.

What is your weekly fitness regime?
I usually visit Planet 2-5 times per week depending on my schedule. I do cardio for about 30 minutes then spend anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour doing weights, chin ups, bar work, legs, etc. I also attend BodyPump classes when I can.

What is your favourite quote?
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
